Bioengineering is an exciting interdisciplinary field involving the application of engineering concepts and tools to solve problems in biology and medicine. The Bioengineering Department within the Volgenau School of Engineering (VSE) consists of primary as well as affiliate faculty from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and Computer Science Department.
The mission of the Bioengineering Department is to create new knowledge and technology at the interface between engineering and bioscience to improve human health through research and education. Our undergraduate degree program
is a challenging yet rewarding educational experience that is attracting excellent students. Our faculty members are developing outstanding competitive research programs while maintaining a commitment to education. Our research areas are:
||• Computational biology
||• Magnetic resonance imaging in medicine
|• Medical ultrasound
|• Neural engineering
We aim to be a nationally recognized leader in bioengineering in both research and education. We are creating partnerships with biomedical organizations in the surrounding Washington DC area to forge research collaborations and expand training and internship opportunities for our students. Our overarching goal is to advance biomedical innovation for the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Nation. Read the Welcome from the Chair of the Department
