Bioengineering was identified as a new thrust area for the university in 2006. Although the BE initiative is centered in the Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering, it also includes numerous other schools of the university, as well as laboratory and clinical facilities at neighboring institutions.

Funds specifically donated to enhance bioengineering are being used to recruit faculty, establish research, and develop educational programs. The Volgenau School moved into a new building in 2009, offering attractive space for all these developments.
